I didn’t get to play my normal Friday tennis match today. The lady who has the membership to the indoor court was sick. If she can’t be there, the rest of us can’t either, as we are guests. She let us know last night, so I texted the daycare director to see if she needed me to come in earlier than 12:30, since I now didn’t have another commitment. Of course, the answer was yes. I told her I would be there at 8:30 to get in a full day.

I got up this morning and turned Tippy out for her morning run. I heard her barking her “There’s something here I’m not sure of bark.” I went out to investigate and heard a eerie, scary cry from an animal that I had never heard before. I did see Tippy, but she took off into the woods, still barking and the creature was still screaming. Unfortunately, I didn’t do a very good job at training Tippy to “come,” so, if she is after something, she doesn’t listen. I didn’t want her to get hurt by whatever it was, so changed clothes and cautiously went traipsing through the woods to see if I could find it and get Tippy, if I could safely do so.

Fortunately, before I got all the way to the bottom of the hill, it quit screaming and Tippy came to me. I came into the house and looked up the call of the animal I suspected it was. I was right. It was a Bobcat. If you have never heard their vocalizations, you can hear them here, if you would like. The scream at about the 25 sec mark is the sound I heard first. That was an interesting way to start my day.

I worked in the 3-4 year old class room this morning. I love that age and those kids, but you could tell there was a full moon today, if you get my drift. This afternoon, I was in the baby room. It was much calmer.

I had to run an errand for mom and then stopped to talk to her on the way home. I didn’t get home until nearly 7 pm. I did my mile walk to keep my streak going before eating dinner.

Stats: Walked 1.0 mile in 16:33 minutes for a 3.6 mph pace. Average HR was 124 bpm. Max was 157 bpm. I swear my HR seems to be faster during my walks than it is when I am running.

Have you ever heard a bobcat in the wild? What is the scariest animal you have encountered when running?

  1. The call of cats in the wild is eerie, to the core.

Bummer about the tennis — that seems to be a fun highpoint of your week.

Obviously, the most dangerous animal I’ve encountered on runs is cyclists.
